A short history of Gustavsberg
The origins of the Gustavsberg porcelain factory reach as far back as the 17th century when noblemen erected a brick factory in the neighborhood of Gustavsberg in Stockholm. In the early 19th century the first ceramics were manufactured at the site which was completely rebuilt to serve as a porcelain factory.
After some struggles, the Gustavsberg porcelain factory found its footing in the second half of the 19th century, mainly manufacturing porcelain household items and artworks.
It wasn’t until the change of the century, though, until the name Gustavsberg rose to worldwide fame. This was mainly the product of the artistic genius of Josef Ekberg, the first “star” in the lineup of the Swedish factory. His revolutionary Sgrafitto technique, where a pattern is carved into a glazed surface, took the heart of the people by storm.
The first decades of the 20th century were then impacted by the works of Wilhelm Kåge and Berndt Friberg who enriched the already renowned variety of porcelain products with their own unique artistic vision.
The greatest breakthrough of Gustavsberg then came under the artistic guidance of the brilliant Stig Lindberg who, among many other things, came up with the now iconic Bersa and Adam pottery sets which now take a very special place among fans of Nordic vintage dinnerware.
After more successes in the following decades, the Gustavsberg porcelain factory went into decline towards the end of the 20th century, unfortunately resulting in its breakup into several parts. The name of Gustavsberg still persists today as one of the most iconic Nordic vintage brands.
