A short history of Royal Copenhagen
Royal Copenhagen, officially called “The Danish Porcelain Factory”, was founded in 1775 under the patronage of the Danish royalty. Even back then, the easily recognizable logo of the three wavy lines was established, symbolizing the three main waterways around Denmark, the Great Belt, the Small Belt and the Oresund.
The first pattern ever produced by the factory, called Blue Fluted, proved to be a timeless favorite of many and is still one of the most sought-after sets in the realm of Nordic vintage. Another classic pattern, Flora Danica, followed shortly after in 1790. Thus, the base for the future success of Royal Copenhagen was built very early.
In 1868, the company got privatized while still retaining the “Royal” title. Towards the end of the 19th century under the supervision of Arnold Krog, Royal Copenhagen was the first of the big European ceramics manufacturers to rapidly shift their designs towards the trends at the time. A move that would soon be copied by their rivals.
Around the same time, Royal Copenhagen further developed the technique to paint under the glaze which gave a lot more artistic freedom to the designers. For their efforts, the company was awarded several prizes, among them the Grand Prix at the Paris World Fair of 1889. This marked the breakthrough of the company on the worldwide stage with openings of stores in Paris, New York and London following in its wake.
In the 20th century, Royal Copenhagen was on the forefront of the Danish Modern Period from the 50s to 70s, experimenting with new design styles. Still, the company is most famous for their classic designs developed all the way back in the 1700s.
Today, vintage Royal Copenhagen dishes made in Denmark are a prized treasure among fans of Nordic vintage especially after the company moved their production towards South East Asia. All items in our inventory are of vintage quality made in the Nordic countries.
